The Yellow Wallpaper is Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s most famous work and a landmark of American Gothic and feminist literature.

Its narrator has been prescribed complete rest by her physician husband and forbidden intellectual work of any kind.

Confined to an upstairs nursery, she secretly continues to write while becoming increasingly absorbed by the room’s grotesque yellow wallpaper. What first appears merely ugly gradually reveals a disturbing pattern-and the figure of a woman behind it.

With remarkable economy, Gilman combines psychological suspense with a critique of medical authority, domestic confinement, and the limited freedom afforded to women in the nineteenth century.
